How You Can Save The Bali Dogs Today
Bali Dogs of the Pasar by Bali Street Photographer - Pasar Ubud Bali
The Bali Dog, the oldest breed in the world, may be facing extinction.
One thing I love about the Bali heritage dog is that they can survive on the streets in the harshest conditions without all the medical treatment that Western dogs need. They can't survive humans however. These dogs are continuously being dumped in rivers, being intentionally poisoned, being slaughtered for their meat, being scarified, silently suffering curable conditions and enduring general cruelty and neglect.
To supply the dog meat industry in Bali, about 100,000 dogs are caught and slaughtered 70% of these dogs are butchered live, 100% of captured dogs are brutally killed and 25% are poisoned. Read more about the Bali Dog Meat Trade Here.
What is the Bali Heritage Dog?
Scientists at the genetic laboratory of the University of California Davis (UCL Davis) who took blood samples from Bali's street dogs concluded that Bali dog is the oldest dog breed known to man. This means the Bali Dog is older than the Australian Dingo, the singing dog from New Guinea, and the wild dog from Africa.
“Studies concluded that the Bali dog is the oldest breed of dog known to man. That means the Bali Dog is older than the Australian Dingo, the New Guinea singing dog, and the African wild dog” - BAWA, Bali Animal Welfare Association.
Meet Toulouse - The Puppy Almost Killed By Kids
This is Toulouse she is only 6 weeks old and has already been through so much. Not only has she lost most of her hair her skin is sore and infected with wounds that have now been infested by maggots, and as if that wasn’t enough next came the children who decided to drag her down to the beach and make her “swim”.
They were throwing her into the water and as she madly paddled to get out they continued to push her back under. Her legs quickly became weak and she wasn’t able to hold her head above the water, so she kept sinking under and inhaling water
Luckily one of our supporters Kim was on holiday and passing through when the incident occurred, she quickly intervened and grabbed little Toulouse from the kids who by then had almost killed her.
Toulouse was rushed to sunset vet but they were unsure how much fluid was now in her lungs and if she would survive or not. Amazingly enough, after emergency treatment and a week of vet care, she is now on the mend and getting stronger every day.
